Quality Food is Just Better
When you begin a Metabolic Balance® lifestyle, you are hit with the realization that you are working with whole foods and you have to cook the food you want. Our culture is driven by convenience because of the fast pace we live in. But the thing with a lot of “convenient” food, is that there is a lot of extra empty calories that lack nutritional value. Let’s change our perspective of consuming quality food full of nutrients that support the needs of your body.
Quality Food
When we talk about the quality of food, we are talking about how much nutrients are provided. Whole foods (fruits, vegetables and grains mostly) are naturally packed with high quality vitamins and minerals. Even when we cook food from being fresh or frozen, there is some nutrients that are lost. So imagine a food that has been processed so many times, it doesn’t provide us with the quality and quantity of nutrients we actually need and would get if we were to prepare the food ourselves.
Now, there are some conveniences that can be found in the store as well that can provide you with quality food still in a form you wish for. Just be sure you are informed about the product, how it’s processed and what the ingredients are. Rule of thumb to read labels, if you read something that you aren’t sure what it is or doesn’t sound like real food, it’s an additive.
Preservatives
Let’s talk about preservatives. Even just a 100 years ago, people were preserving food naturally through canning, freezing, salting, etc. Lemon has been used for preservatives for a long time which is where citric acid naturally comes from and is commonly found as a preservative. While citric acid is naturally found in the fruit, lemon, manufactured citric acid is very different. Manufactured citric acid comes from mold actually and is the most commonly used preservative world wide. While manufactured citric acid is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the FDA, further studies need to be conducted due to reports of sickness and allergic reactions to the additive. [1]
While most of our preservatives come from a natural place, we have to recognize how much is also manufactured. These manufactured preservatives, while they perform the desired effect on the food, our bodies may have trouble processing food that is full of them.
Eating a diet of whole foods with natural elements like citric acid will be processed better in the body and we balance out those processes.
Quality and Calories
I recently had a conversation with one of our clients and they made the observation that they eat almost 1000 calories a day and they were able to lose almost 20 pounds, meeting their goal. In a calorie driven culture, it’s important to remember the quality of those calories that we are providing our bodies.
